Kony 2012

Dear readers,

Today’s post is something very different. It’s not about beauty products, it’s not superficial and it’s not cheerful. But if just one person reads this and becomes aware of the Invisible Children Campaign it will be completely worthwhile. Some of you may already be aware of the campaign and of who Joseph Kony is. If not, please keep reading. I’m not the sort of person to force my views or beliefs onto other people. However, I felt so moved by this that I felt the need to post about it and I hope you understand the reason for this non beauty post.

Today I spent 30 minutes watching the campaign film and am truly horrified by what I have learnt. Joesph Kony is the leader of the LRA (the Lord’s Resistance Army). For over 25 years he and the LRA have been able to abduct over 60,000 children and force them into becoming child soldiers or sex slaves. These children are abducted from their homes and forced to murder and mutilate and it’s gone unnoticed by the world outside of Uganda. Joseph Kony was indicted at the International Criminal Court at the Hague in 2005 but he remains free to hurt more children. It is hoped that this will change by the end of 2012.

The campaign is simple, to make Joseph Kony famous. If the world becomes aware of his horrific crimes and speaks out, those in Government across the world cannot ignore it any longer. They will be forced to act and support forces in Uganda in locating and finally capturing  Kony and bringing him to justice.

In the UK we are fortunate enough to have the luxury of free speech. We are able to dream and aspire, we have opportunities people in Uganda never will. We are lucky and most of us will never be in a position where we have to fear for our lives. We will never have to worry that our brother/ sister/ son/ daughter will be abducted from their beds. It’s time that we look beyond our own lives and take part in something bigger.

If you do one thing today please find 30 minutes to watch the campaign film below. It fully explains the aims and objectives of the campaign and puts a face to the children of the Uganda.
